    First edition, illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece by Cazes engraved by Tardieu, a title vignette by Humblot repeated, and four repeated headpieces by the same artist, as well as a folding map of ancient Greece and a plate of medals. Title pages printed in red and black.
    Contemporary full mottled and polished calf. Spine richly gilt in compartments. Red morocco title label, volume label in gilt-decorated brown calf. Losses to the headcaps of volumes I and III. Splits to the upper joints of volume I. In volume I, from pages 190 to 370, two small wormholes affect the upper margin; from page 371 onwards, these gradually develop into short tunnels, extending 1.5 cm along the upper...

    The Roman jeweller Alessandro Castellani (1823–1883) was also an enlightened collector of ancient and medieval artefacts, from which he sometimes drew inspiration for his jewellery designs.

    Jean de Witte (1808–1889), archaeologist and numismatist, became a member of the Institut in 1886.

    Bound in later half brown cloth, smooth spine, gilt initials at foot, some rubbing to the joints, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers, corners worn, a few nicks to the edges, speckled edges; a modest later binding.

    This is the first comprehensive study devoted to Armenian numismatics. From the series "Bibliothèque historique arménienne", published by Edouard Dulaurier.

    First official edition, largely in first printing, of the Recueil des lettres de Madame la marquise de Sévigné à Madame la comtesse de Grignan, sa fille, edited by Denis-Marius Perrin under the supervision of Pauline de Simiane, the author's granddaughter. The first four volumes were published by Nicolas Simart in 1734; the final two, completing the collection, by Rollin fils in 1737. The set contains 614 letters, all addressed to Madame de Grignan.

    First edition, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author in the first volume, 6 maps and plans, and 70 engraved portraits hors-texte, including 65 depicting the Grand Masters of the Order of Malta. (cf. Brunet, V, 1149. Cohen 1011. Saffroy 5420.)

    Some restorations to the joints, early marginal annotations at the bottom of pages, library stamp on all three volumes, the third of which is bound slightly differently with regard to the gilt tooling; a loss on the endpaper of the first volume, which has been partially cut out.

    A good copy.
