Founded in Paris in 1829, the Revue des Deux Mondes quickly rose to prominence under François Buloz (1831–1877) as a leading venue for Romantic-era criticism and debate, publishing figures such as Sainte-Beuve, George Sand, Stendhal, Taine, and Heine. Moving beyond travel writing, it developed into a generalist review spanning literature, history, the arts, and politics.
