First edition of this important series of plates, published in Lyon by Louis Perrin in 1858 following Antoine-Marie Chenavard's journey through Greece and the Levant in 1843-1844.

 

Folio. 81 steel-engraved plates by various artists, including Dubouchet, after drawings by Antoine-Marie Chenavard and Étienne Rey: a route map, a plan of Athens dated 1843, and 79 plates numbered I-LXXV. The series includes plates LVIbis and LVIIbis, called for in the plate list, together with XXVIIIbis and XLVIIIbis, neither of which appears in the list and both of which occur only in certain copies. First edition of this rare album illustrated with 15 line-engraved plates, each protected by a tissue guard and accompanied by a caption leaf, including a reproduction of the author's portrait drawn by Ingres in Rome in 1818.

Publisher's original full grey boards, flat spine without lettering, some rubbing, blind-ruled borders on covers, a scratch to the foot of the upper cover, central title, corners rubbed.

Some foxing.

Inscribed by Antoine-Marie Chenavard to his friend Antonin L., with the author's signed presentation note.

 

First edition of this rare album, published in Lyon in 1861 by the press of Louis Perrin, illustrated with 15 line-engraved plates under captioned tissue guards. At the front appears a facsimile of the portrait of Chenavard drawn by Ingres in Rome in 1818; the remaining plates, engraved by Dubouchet, Séon and Thomassin, reproduce a selection of drawings made during his formative journey through Italy, Sicily and Istria.

Half chocolate brown morocco binding with corners, spine with five raised bands set with gilt fillets and decorated with double gilt compartments, light rubbing traces on joints, double gilt fillet frame on marbled paper boards, small restored tear at foot of first board, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, top edge gilt retaining deckled edges, binding signed by Cottin-Simier.
Work illustrated with a photographic portrait of the author as frontispiece.

First edition, one of 450 copies on tinted paper, the only issue with 50 on Holland paper.
Two tears to spine, three slight marginal lacks to boards, otherwise handsome copy with unfaded gilt covers.
