Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

  1. [INQUISITION] El Tribunal del Santo Oficio de la Inquisicion en las Islas Filipinas[INQUISITION] El Tribunal del Santo Oficio de la Inquisicion en las Islas Filipinas
    José Toribio MEDINA ZAVALA

[INQUISITION] El Tribunal del Santo Oficio de la Inquisicion en las Islas Filipinas[The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in the Philippine Islands]

    Imprenta Elzeviriana|Santiago de Chile [Santiago [Santiago]] 1899|13.6 x 19 cm|Broché

Rare first edition, one of 300 copies printed (cf. Palau 159 501).

Not recorded by Pardo de Tavera; only two copies listed in the CCF (BnF and Cujas).

The bibliography of the eminent Chilean historian José Toribio Medina Zavala (1852-1930) is extensive, though he is chiefly known for his works on Chile and Latin America. He also took an interest in other Spanish possessions, as shown by this short monograph, which appears to be the only early study devoted to the subject.

Small tears to spine and along the margins of the wrappers, with a few marginal tears to some leaves owing to the poor quality of the paper.

First edition, bringing together in a single volume the three Persian sections issued by the Elzeviers at Leiden in 1639: the Historia Christi Persice conscripta and Historia S. Backer & Sommervogel VIII, 1339-1340; Willems 490 and 477.

La pucelle ou la France delivree

    Jean Sambix • ( Elzevier)|à Leyden [Leiden] • (Leyde) [Leiden] 1656|8 x 14 cm|relié
First edition? Title page with sphere device. Elzevier edition published at the same time as a Parisian edition by Augustin Courbé, illustrated. It is not clear why the Elzevier edition would be the original, as nothing could have prevented Chapelain from publishing a work in Paris that the entire literary world was awaiting; it would be more coherent to consider that the 1656 Courbé edition is the first and that the Leiden edition was composed from it.
Full red morocco binding, late 19th century, signed A. Bertrand. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Gilt title. Wide inner decorative border. Light rubbing to headcaps and joints at head. Handsome copy.

    Chez Pierre Marteau • ( Elzevier?)|à Cologne 1665|7.50 x 13 cm|2 tomes en 2 volumes reliés
Edition with the same date as the original, and at the same address, but which does not possess the same collation. Furthermore, volume I does not contain the fleuron found on the original, although it appears on the title page of the second volume; the typographical material is substantially different for the title pages. The first volume contains 403pp. versus 501pp. for the original, the second has only 493pp. versus 132pp. and 808pp for the second volume of the original. There also exists a version in 3 volumes at Pierre Marteau's address on the same date. These differences between the three editions are not elucidated.
