    Our copy is preserved in its original wrappers, in blue paper with a plain temporary cover, and a title label affixed at the head of the spine.

    Some minor foxing, a faint water stain in the right margin of a few leaves at the end of the volume.

    At the age of twenty, Armand-Pierre Caussin de Perceval (1795–1871) departed for Constantinople as an interpreter. He travelled through Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon, and served as a dragoman in Aleppo in 1820.

    Upon returning to France, he was appointed to the chair of colloquial Arabic at the École des Langues Orientales, and succeeded his father in 1833...

    Contemporary full mottled fawn sheep, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, joints rubbed, red shagreen title-piece, gilt rolls to the headcaps partly faded, gilt dentelle border to the boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, gilt fillets to the edges of the boards, partly browned, red edges.

    Joints restored, circular losses filled in the blank areas of the title and half-title pages.

    Full red morocco binding, spine with five raised bands decorated with black fillets, gilt date at foot, gilt roulettes on headcaps, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, frame of gilt dentelle on pastedowns, double gilt fillets on edges, top edge gilt, original wrappers preserved, full marbled paper slipcase with marbled paper lining, perfect binding signed by Thivet, a binder who worked during the last quarter of the 19th century.
    Bookplate pasted on one pastedown, bibliophilic notes in pencil on an endpaper by a previous owner of the work.

    Fine copy of one of the rarest "Romantics", complete with the frontispiece on China paper, drawn and engraved by Célestin Nanteuil.
