First French edition. The first edition appeared in London, in English, in 1782. The French edition was nonetheless reworked, corrected, and translated by the author himself who then added a second volume and even went so far as changing the name of the narrator, James, to his own. What's more, the French edition is much more anti-English and pro-American.
Contemporary light brown marbled calf, spines gilt, red morocco title- and volume- pieces. Orange edges. Very good copies in very good condition.

Second edition, the first having appeared in 1767. Two frontispieces, one by Cochin, the second by Pierre Delin, and two headpieces engraved by Choffart. Some copies, at the request of the purchaser who could commission them, contained 50 engravings. These copies appear very rare.
Half brown marbled sheep binding, mid-19th century. Spine with raised bands decorated with roulettes on the bands and roulettes at the headcaps. Red shagreen title label and black shagreen volume label. Head caps fragile, with small lacks. Rubbing. The copy has been interleaved with numerous leaves, most of which remained blank, but some contain annotations.
