    In 1838 the “Chinese Museum” opened in Philadelphia on the ground floor of the museum of Charles Willson Peale, based on the objects brought back from China by the Quaker merchant Nathan Dunn (1782–1844), who had returned from a long commercial stay in Canton (1818–1832).

    The whole of this collection was also exhibited in London in 1842 and, after Dunn’s death, again in 1851, the latter showing meeting with far less success.

    The fate of the objects that composed it remains obscure, but the collection fell victim to its own success and appears to have been both...

    Rare first edition of this study tracing the origins of An Ordinance for the government of the territory of the United States North-West of the River Ohio, adopted on 13 July 1787 by the United States Congress to organize the Northwest Territory, the first new territory incorporated into the young nation, of which Pennsylvania formed the eastern boundary.

    Small losses to the unlettered spine, a dampstain to the upper margin throughout the volume, affecting the text only very marginally.

    No copy recorded by the CCF. Sabin 14,327.

    Edward Coles (1786-1868) also served as the second Governor of the State of Illinois from 1822 to 1826.

    Contemporary full brown porphyry calf binding. Smooth spine decorated. Tawny morocco title label. Light rubbing. Very fine copy, very fresh.
    This account forms one of the finest French testimonies on the American War of Independence. Abbé Robin was chaplain to the French corps under Rochambeau's command, on Benjamin Franklin's recommendation. Valuable information on the march of French troops during 1781. Robin landed in Boston in May 1781. Description of Boston, Cambridge University, Providence, fauna and flora, portrait of Washington, Philadelphia, Baltimore.
