Stated third edition. It should be noted that there is no second edition as such: the first edition was issued in two printings, and this so-called third edition is in fact the second, and moreover identical in every respect to the first. In addition to the two title medallions, the edition should comprise 14 plates; our copy contains only 11, lacking the frontispiece to the first part and two further plates (the 7th, entitled “La Naïveté”, and the 13th, “L'Audience”).

Bradel binding in half fawn cloth, flat spine decorated with a gilt fleuron and double gilt fillet at foot, brown shagreen title label, marbled paper boards.

This is the major work of Jules-Charles Scholl (1850–1886), who lived in Bienne and Neuchâtel; it stands apart from his usual writings, which were largely focused on animal advocacy.

Autograph letter signed by Honoré de Balzac, addressed to his friend, the writer Charles de Bernard. One page written in black ink on a bifolium. On the verso of the second leaf appears the address of the recipient [Charles de Bernard du Grail], written in Balzac’s hand, along with postal stamps and the seal bearing the arms of the Balzac d’Entraigues family, which the author had appropriated.

A few minor holes not affecting the text; fold marks as usual from mailing.

First edition, one of 35 copies on Holland paper, the limited deluxe issue following 19 on China paper.

A fine copy, with a visiting card tipped in on a blank leaf bearing the manuscript note: "de ton beau-frère, un échantillon des éditions suisses".

New edition, the first and only one in quarto, of this extensive historical and geographical description of Switzerland, which originated in Abraham Ruchat's Délices and was progressively recast over more than sixty years. Published in Neuchâtel by Samuel Fauche in 1778, it comprises two volumes substantially enlarged from the earlier editions, combining Ruchat's text with that of Abraham Stanyan and contributions by several other authors. A binder's instruction leaf at the end of each volume specifies the arrangement of the extensive series of illustrations.

First edition, one of 662 numbered copies on Aravis vellum, the only copies printed on deluxe paper.

The sole, uncommon edition of this defence of the serfs of the Abbey of Saint-Claude in their dispute with their lord.
