Foreign Literature

Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

  1. "Contrairement à ce qu'on pourrait croire, je ne suis pas dans le coup"
    Antoine BLONDIN (to Roger NIMIER)

"Contrairement à ce qu'on pourrait croire, je ne suis pas dans le coup"Press review with autograph comments addressed to his best friend Roger Nimier from Mayenne

    s. n.|Laval 11 septembre 1957|17 x 12.90 cm|2 feuillets avec coupures de presse contrecollées
Amusing press review commented by Antoine Blondin addressed to Roger Nimier at his Parisian office at the N.R.F.
Blondin sends his lifelong friend newspaper clippings from local papers which he pastes on squared sheets.
    Envelope included.
Beautiful manifestation of the anarchist and zany spirit that guided the steps, not often steady but always soaked, of Antoine Blondin, and of the fraternal and thunderous friendship that united him with Roger Nimier.
The star of sports journalism prepares for Nimier a collection of news items taken from Ouest France Mayenne:
Feeding his own reputation as a ribald and...

Long and exceptional autograph letter signed by Antoine Blondin, addressed to fellow Hussar Roger Nimier at his home on rue de Coëtlogon.
Blondin plans a gargantuan feast, detailing at length the wines to be served for each guest, while indulging in witty reflections on man’s alcoholic ontology: "Si tu avais simplement lu 'Tiens, voilà du Bouddha !' d'Hubert Robert tu saurais : [...] que cet homme dualiste, sans unité intérieure, a besoin de Bourgogne et de Bordeaux."

56 lines on two folded leaves.
    Envelope enclosed.

Lettre autographe signée d'une page adressée à son meilleur ami Roger Nimier depuis Laval

    Laval 23 Septembre 1957|17 x 22 cm|un feuillet + une enveloppe

Remarkable autograph letter signed by Antoine Blondin, addressed to Roger Nimier at his Paris office at the N.R.F., in which he recounts—perhaps not entirely sober—his misadventures in “marital” cohabitation with a seminarian named Prébende Alexis.
29 lines on a folded sheet.
    Envelope included.
Published in À mes prochains: lettres, 1943-1984, ed. Alain Cresciucci, 2009, p. 110.
In a highly humorous and irreverent tone, Antoine Blondin writes to his “dear friend” a list of edifying events from his Mayenne existence, enumerated, as “I believe the time has come to enlighten you about certain things that have happened to...
