    First edition of this highly important work, presenting the full text of all decrees and ordinances relating to trade with the Americas, primarily the West Indies (cf. Sabin 11812. Leclerc 113. Barbier I, 649 c. Ined 1038, 1783 edition).

    Illustrated with two engraved frontispiece titles and ten maps (nine folding), depicting South America, North America (repeated in vol. 2), Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint-Domingue (2), Cayenne and its surroundings, Louisiana, the Guinea coast, as well as twelve engraved plates showing botanical specimens (sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, cocoa), genre scenes (a Black king dispensing justice, a slave market, turtle fishing), various tools and objects (ventilator, suction pump), industrial activities (plantation layout, sugar mill, indigo workshop), etc.

    Bound in modern pastiche bindings: half mottled tan sheep over marbled boards, spine with five raised bands adorned with gilt garlands, double gilt panels, red edges.

    Minor black ink stains to the edges of volume one, a pleasant copy overall.

    Autograph signed photographic postcard from Paul-Jean Toulet (27 lines in blue ink) addressed to his cousin Mauricia Chaline who was his great provider of alcohol, food, tobacco and laudanum.
    Penniless, he begs his cousin to come to his aid: "l'argent des pardessus... et autant pour le voyage et menues dépenses... me sont devenues indispensables quoi que je fasse..." ["the money for overcoats... and as much for the journey and small expenses... have become indispensable to me whatever I do..."] and confesses to feeling better in Avignon: "... le climat d'Avignon me convient assez - je n'y ait pas du tout de fièvre, c'est ce qui fait je pense, que je bois si peu..." ["... the climate of Avignon suits me well enough - I have no fever at all here, which is why I think I drink so little..."]
    The postcard depicts the Notre-Dame de Tout-Pouvoir chapel of Avignon cathedral.
    An opium-addicted and inveterate alcoholic dandy, a poet unknown to the general public but admired by his peers, notably by José Luis Borges, Paul-Jean Toulet was a novelist (Monsieur du Paur, Mon amie Nane) but above all a master of poetic prose. His masterpiece Contrerimes, a collection of quatrains published after his death combining enclosed rhymes and crossed metrical structure, assured him posthumous success and inspired his poet friends including Francis Carco and Tristan Derème who, taking him as a model, proclaimed themselves "whimsical poets". Confessing that what he had loved most in the world were women, alcohol and landscapes, he died of a laudanum overdose, a substance derived from opium.

    First French edition in the translation by Esprit Pézenas, and illustrated with 73 folding plates engraved by Faure and distributed throughout the 2 volumes (astronomy, camera obscura, telescope...). The first English edition appeared in 1738 under the title A compleat system of opticks. Additions supplement Smith's work on optical discoveries that have been made since publication.

    Contemporary full marbled calf bindings. Decorated spines with raised bands. Red morocco title labels and black morocco volume labels. Headcaps worn. Lack at foot of volume I along the upper joint. Joints cracked at head. Upper joint cracked at foot in volume I and split in volume II. 4 corners bumped. Lack to volume label of volume I. Set rubbed. Library label in the 5th compartment with the letter N.

    The most important and complete treatise on optics of the 18th century. It is both a popular work of popularization and a scientific treatise and consists of distinct parts. The first, entitled Popular Treatise is a summary of all optical phenomena with its experiments; the second part is an application of geometry in the theory of light and optics, the third section of the work is a treatise on mechanics applied to optics and intended mainly for artisans with processes for making mirrors, lenses, camera obscuras, polished glasses... The fourth part is a history of astronomy and its discoveries. It should be noted that for the author, light has a corpuscular character despite Newton's doubts on this subject.

    The first part is a series of advice for successful silkworm breeding; the second consists of observations on the management of silkworms; the last relates a method for harvesting silkworm eggs. Following, a detailed table of the work's contents.

    Giovanni Stefano Menochio was an Italian Jesuit priest of the 17th century, who died in 1655 in Rome. He was a highly renowned theologian, his commentaries concerned essentially the Holy Scriptures, and numerous editions were made of them. This edition is a reprint of the Tournemire edition published in 1729, in folio. It is considered to be the best organized.

    Contemporary full speckled brown calf binding. Spine with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and floral and starred motifs, red morocco title label. All edges red. Calf very lightly rubbed in places and a small wormhole on the spine, otherwise a very handsome copy, quite fresh.
    The first collected edition of Thomas's works would not appear until 1826. A poet and essayist, Thomas is known for his numerous eulogies of famous figures, and his Essay on the Manners and Spirit of Women which made history. A man of letters who cultivated independence of mind, he was also a public figure, secretary of foreign affairs under the ministry of the Duke of Praslin, then member of the French Academy in 1767. He was attributed the greatest qualities of eloquence.

    New edition, revised and expanded, the original having appeared in two parts, in 1774 and in 1778.
    Contemporary bindings in full speckled brown calf, spines with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons, blonde and black morocco title and volume labels, all edges red. Several headcaps are worn, some small wormholes to note and corners are bumped, otherwise a handsome copy.
    The work had enormous impact in Europe and went through more than thirty-five editions. It was praised by Chateaubriand as an example of Christian novel; it is a singular blend of anti-philosophical novel and sentimental novels in the Richardson style, using the epistolary genre then in fashion. The story is that of a young man led astray by his passions and by a pernicious society, a very common theme in the 18th century.

    Fabre d'Églantine (1750-1794) was a strange character, first an itinerant actor then writer of comedies, he became Danton's secretary then deputy to the Convention, to end up guillotined in 1794 (for forgery and use of forgeries), alongside Danton whom he had principally contributed to having executed.

    The first edition in French, translated by Marc-Antoine Eidous, with a large map of “la Province et des Missions de la Compagnie de Jésus du nouveau royaume de Grenade [the Province and Missions of the Society of Jesus in the New Kingdom of Grenada” and two folding plates. The first Spanish edition, El Orinoco ilustrado, was published in Madrid in 1741.
    Contemporary brown marbled calf. Spine with gilt compartments and fleurons as well as toffee-colored and red title labels, blindruled fillet frame to covers, all edges marbled.
    A small wormtrack to foot of volume two, some miniscule rubbing to covers of volume one, joints of volume two slightly cracked, otherwise a very good and fresh copy.
    Joseph Gumilla (1686-1750) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and missionary in Columbia and Venezuela. He left Spain in 1705 for New Grenada (now Columbia). From 1715 on for thirty five years, he lived in the Orinoco plain, now a part of Venezuela. Gumilla took the opportunity to learn the languages of the local indigenous peoples and build up his knowledge of astronomy and natural history. On his return to Madrid, he wrote his Natural History based on these observations.
    The work is interested in both the various indigenous tribes around the Orinoco (Othomacos, Guamos, Saliva), their physical appearance, languages, customs, rituals and beliefs. A good deal of the work is also dedicated to fauna (caimans, snakes, insects, fish, turtles, and so on).
    These anthropological and naturalist observations are nonetheless informed by the religious tone of the missionary. Weiss, in the supplement to the Biographie universelle ancienne et moderne notes: “Having noticed customs among the Indians similar to those of the Israelites, he concluded that the two people were of common origin, and that the Indians were the descendants of Shem, the cursed son of Noah, and thus that it was rightful for the Spanish to have reduced them to slavery…The Histoire de l'Orénoque, despite its above-mentioned faults, is a very interesting work and is a very pleasant read.”
