Polished calf: leather treated to obtain a smooth and shiny finish

Tree calf : stained by an interaction of copperas and pearl-ash to resemble the branches of a tree 

Speckled calf : its surface is riddled with very small, closely spaced black spots

Porphyry calf: in the image of the marble of the same name, it is strewn with fine spots of various colors, often red

Mottled calf: dyed with brown, red or green tones

Tortoise-shell patterned calf: calfskin adorned with fairly large red spots
