Foreign Literature

Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Louis Yseux

Louis Yseux is an artistic bookbinder. "A former craftsman at Durvand's workshop, he entered into partnership with Thierry in 1908, successor to Petit, who was himself successor to Simier fils, and took over the business entirely in 1915. The workshop was then located at 5 quai de Conti. When the building was threatened with demolition, Yseux transferred the workshop a few years later to 18 rue Dauphine, where he practiced until 1951, the year of his death. Barbance succeeded him shortly thereafter and in turn relocated the workshop near Avallon in the Yonne.
Yseux had a clientele of bibliophiles and his signature appears in numerous library sales." (Julien Fléty, "Dictionnaire des relieurs français ayant exercé de 1800 à nos jours")
