Full red morocco-grained shagreen binding, spine with five raised bands set with black fillets, one scratch on a band, black paper endpapers and pastedowns, triple gilt fillets framing the pastedowns, covers (one tear without loss to margin of second cover) and spine preserved, top edge gilt, binding signed Lavaux.
Discreet scratch marks on the boards, one clear mark from adhesive tape discharge at head of page bearing the autograph inscriptions.

In the Bibliographie Sommaire Des Keepsakes (Frédéric Lachèvre) and other collective collections of the romantic period, on this album listed: "Exceptionally, given the rarity of this work, we give the titles of the pieces that compose it."

Half-calf binding with lavallière corners from the early 20th century signed Lavaux at the top of the first endpaper. Smooth spine decorated with 5 tools, gilt and blind fillets. Red edges. Spine uniformly faded. Foxing on the first 4 leaves and in the notes and some scattered foxing throughout. Handsome copy.
Hugo's play, of unusual length at 6,920 verses, was reputed to be unplayable, notably due to its numerous changes of scenery. It breaks definitively with classical theater. The famous preface to the play would remain as a manifesto of romantic theater.

Second edition on ordinary paper printed immediately after the first edition in which appear the three chapters on Balzac that caused scandal.
