    Controversial since its publication owing to its title, the novel recounts the adventures of a young couple from Harlem, in the cabarets and soirées of the New York neighborhood. Van Vechten tirelessly supported African-American artists and writers, even after the decline of the movement that had drawn so many white intellectuals to Harlem.

"," If you give up Friday, put me a word here, because I have another lunch, but without FFL that is annoying me. "
    Paul Morand ends his letter with an "all yours" that sounds like a thunderous call to see his friend one last time before long.
