    Minor foxing without consequence on some leaves.
    A handsome and very rare full-margined copy of this work denouncing the misdeeds of French colonization in the Maghreb.
    Mission providentielle, published in 65 copies at the author's expense under the pseudonym of François Lazerge, consists of a first version of La Rose de sable which would appear, in its definitive version, from Henri Lefebvre in 1967.
    Finally, fearing he would incur the wrath of the authorities, Henri de Montherlant refused to have Mission providentielle distributed and published it only privately.

    Important autograph inscription signed by Henri de Montherlant to the woman of letters and philosopher Alice Poirier: "A Alice Poirier, qui trouvera ici Khosröes et de ses compagnons, sympathique souvenir de Montherlant." (To Alice Poirier, who will find here Khosroes and his companions, kind regards from Montherlant.)
    Fervent admirer and lover of Henri de Montherlant whom she nicknamed her "dear Rilet," Alice Poirier maintained, from 1927 to 1950, an important correspondence with the writer, letters to which the latter did not always respond but which he kept to nourish his work.
    Thus, Alice Poirier served as model for the two principal female figures, Andrée Hacquebaut and Solange Dandillot, of the tetralogy cycle of "Jeunes filles."
    Brilliant doctor of philosophy, she was equally close to Pierre Drieu la Rochelle and Jean Paulhan and drew from her epistolary correspondence with her great love, in 1955, a largely autobiographical novel entitled Récit de Grete in which Henri de Montherlant appeared under the character of Michel Cabrol.

    Henri de Montherlant shares, with his correspondent, the emotion provided by a phrase by Julien Green: "... je connaissais par coeur, quasiment, cette phrase de Green, tant j'y avais été sensible... Mais j'avoue n'avoir pas pensé que "R" était vous. Raison de plus pour en être touché." ("... I knew by heart, almost, this phrase by Green, so much had it moved me... But I confess I had not thought that "R" was you. All the more reason to be touched by it.")
    He considers having his latest work sent to him: "Je voudrais bien vous envoyer moi-même le volume d'Espana sagrada si votre libraire ne peut l'avoir, j'en demanderai un exemplaire à Wapler." ("I would very much like to send you myself the volume of Espana sagrada if your bookseller cannot get it, I will ask Wapler for a copy.") and seems affected by a false idea that people have about his work "Le chaos et la nuit": "... Je suis un peu agaçé qu'on écrive souvent que dans le "Chaos" je renie la Tauromachie. Je renie comme tous les aficionades, la mauvaise tauromachie. Mais ce qui est le plus important dans la tauromachie, c'est qu'elle est une façon d'être, une façon de se tenir devant la vie, et par là dépasse bien le jeu de l'arène." ("... I am a bit annoyed that people often write that in "Chaos" I renounce bullfighting. I renounce, like all aficionados, bad bullfighting.     Having returned from a long stay in Morocco, Henri de Montherlant explains his current working method and discusses his upcoming publication projects: "... la Rose de sable, roman, paraîtra fin 1931 et qu'une édition adaptée pour la jeunesse de mes deux Olympiques sera publiée l'an prochain par Larousse..." ["... la Rose de sable, a novel, will appear at the end of 1931 and that an edition adapted for young people of my two Olympiques will be published next year by Larousse..."]
    He regrets not being able to immediately accommodate Christian Melchior-Bonnet's request for manuscript pages of his works in progress in order to review them in his Nouvelles littéraires: "Je vous donnerai bien volontiers les quelques feuillets que vous demandez, autographes. Mais je n'ai rien ici que les deux états des brouillons de la Rose de Sable et comme je vis dans la crainte de perdre le manuscrit principal, que je transporte dans mes déplacements, je garde le second." ["I would gladly give you the few pages you request, autographs. But I have nothing here except the two states of the drafts of la Rose de Sable and as I live in fear of losing the main manuscript, which I carry with me when I travel, I keep the second one."]
