Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

NationalityFrance
Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Fernand Cormon's studio, André-Edouard Marty began contributing to the Gazette du Bon Ton from the very first issue, quickly making his name with an elegant style distinguished by a persistent touch of fantasy and humour.

Working firmly within an Art Deco sensibility, he drew the gowns of Poiret alongside Lepape, as well as those of Lanvin and Dœuillet. It is above all in his illustrations of Dœuillet's creations that the full range of his draughtsmanship is revealed: playful, in Tais-toi, mon cœur!, where a young Cupid takes aim at a seemingly startled young woman; bucolic, in Le Goûter au jardin, where neatly dressed little girls serve their mother, herself attired in an elegant gown; and perhaps melancholic, in Le Secret joli, which shows two young women shyly exchanging confidences.

Like his fellow contributors to the Gazette, Marty also worked for other fashion periodicals - among them Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, two competing magazines for which he was one of the rare illustrators to work simultaneously. Alongside his fashion work, he also produced illustrations for literary publications, including Henry de Régnier's Scènes mythologiques and Pierre Louÿs's Les Chansons de Bilitis in 1937.

His stylistic eclecticism reached its apogee in 1943, when he created an animated film, Callisto, la petite nymphe de Diane ; a final, moving incarnation of the female silhouettes he had been composing for the Gazette throughout his career.
