Rare original etching by Camille Pissarro, titled "La Sarcleuse", one of 12 prints in 2nd state, after the artist's first state print and three or four proofs in 2nd state.
Like several other copies, it is marked in pencil "2e État imprimé par F. Jacques". Uniformly browned, scattered foxing, outer margins sunned with small marginal tears.
Exceptionally inscribed by the artist to his great friend, the painter Maximilien Luce: "Pour l'ami M. Luce".

Five volumes bound in light blue half-cloth, smooth spines, blue morocco title labels decorated with double filets, marbled paper boards (4 volumes). The color title pages have been preserved and bound in. Marginal tears without damage to the text (no. 163; no. 165; no. 184, p. 2). Marginal restorations without damage to text on 8 leaves between nos. 214 and 223. Two leaves of no. 224 backed. Marginal tear with some paper missing (no. 345, p.1). Format of quires in the first volume varies; some are trimmed more than others.

The first edition of this rare collection, almost complete and comprising 416 issues of four pages, each illustrated with a color caricature and sometimes illustrations to text. A ninth volume appeared in 1899.
Contemporary half red shagreen over marbled paper boards, spine in six compartments, titles and volume numbers in gold, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, title page preserved in each volume.
Spines uniformly faded, a little spotting and occasional browning. No. 136 slightly shaved by binder and first page of No. 74 restore

With 9 original lithographs by Maximilen Luce, one of 10 numbered copies on vergé de Hollande and justified by the illustrator, the tirage de tête.
This copy retains its suite on Japon ancien paper. Three miniscule lacks to edges of upper cover.
These are portraits of friends in prison, of which three are of the “eminence grise of symbolism,” the anarchist journalist and art critic Félix Fénéon. Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was himself imprisoned at Mazas. The former engraver never stopped vigorously asserting his Socialistic ideas in his work, as well as his sympathy for the anarchist movement.
A good and rare copy.
