Trained at the Humbert studio alongside Braque, Picabia, and Laurencin, Georges Lepape began working for Paul Poiret as early as 1910. Two years later, he was invited by its founder Lucien Vogel to contribute to the Gazette du Bon Ton, and went on to become the preferred illustrator of Poiret's creations.

His linear style, combined with vivid colours, accentuates the curves of each garment whilst inscribing them harmoniously within their decorative setting - as may be seen in Les Cerises or Les Citrons. He also distinguished himself in the production of accessory plates, creating dynamic and colourful compositions such as Les Rubans.

After the First World War, whilst Charles Martin succeeded him at the Gazette for Poiret's designs, Lepape turned his attention to the creations of Lanvin, whilst simultaneously contributing to Vogue.
