Minor lack at head of one board. Occasional foxing.

Half black sheep binding, spine in four compartments decorated with gilt fleurons showing some rubbing. One engraving as frontispiece, gift inscription in ink.
The work presents itself as a rich alphabetical repertoire intending to catalog, with supporting text extracts from the greatest French authors, the oddities and words sometimes touching on the slang of the French language.
Rare and interesting work.

New edition, entirely revised and considerably expanded. Illustrated with 21 steel engravings (Vicaire lists only 18) by Staal, engraved by Delanoy...
Half wine-red shagreen. Spine with raised bands decorated with roulettes and a large central mirrored ornament. Top edge gilt. Spine uniformly lightened. Minor scuffing to tail. Very good copy, particularly fresh. Printed on fine laid paper.
The excerpts are structured around qualities acknowledged as specifically feminine (prudery, modesty, jealousy, beauty, coquetry...).
