Artiste-peintre et illustratrice, Valentine Hugo (Valentine Gross) étudie aux Beaux-Arts de Paris entre 1907 et 1910 puis elle dessine les costumes et la chorégraphie du Sacre du printemps d'après Vaslav Nijinski en 1913.

C'est à cette époque qu'elle commence à dessiner des vignettes de mode pour la Gazette du Bon ton, dans un style graphique très reconnaissable. Ses gravures, exécutées à l'encre de Chine, se distinguent des autres par leur absence de couleurs qui renforce le style épuré et le trait précis de Valentine Gross. Les corps deviennent des silhouettes et les créations des couturiers en sont d'autant plus mises en valeur par un subtil jeu de clair-obscur. Vers 1926, elle se lie aux surréalistes et s'éloigne du monde de la mode, lui préférant l'illustration de livres de Char, Crevel ou Eluard.

    Precious signed autograph presentation inscription from Colette to Valentine Hugo, painter and muse of the Surrealists: "Pour Valentine Hugo, beau nom, beau visage, - l'âme a suivi".
    Colette, by then an emancipated woman, recounts her life with Willy. The captions to the photographic reproductions are biting with irony.

    Rare complete set of four pamphlets with poems by Georges Hugnet in first edition published during the Occupation, illustrated by Picasso, Joan Miro, and Valentine Hugo. The first titled "Non-vouloir" was limited to only 26 copies; our copy is one of the 20 copies on vergé antique de Montval, following 6 copies on japon. The three others on ordinary paper from a limited edition of 200 copies.
