Last flame of late romanticism, Dominique is a sentimental novel, imbued with profound melancholy, largely inspired by autobiographical events and narrating the story of an impossible love. It is the only novel by this celebrated painter, and remains one of the great works of 19th-century French literature.

Account of Fromentin's journey to southern Algeria and his stay at Laghouat during the summer of 1853. The famous orientalist painter created a particular narrative of vision that is uniquely his own.

Edition illustrated with 40 original etchings by Gustave Leheutre engraved by Eugène Delâtre and printed in 117 numbered copies on Arches laid paper, this copy printed for Jean Borderel.
This is the only work illustrated by the painter.

Our copy is enriched with an original drawing of the painter and engraver Jean Frélaut depicting a desert landscape that he signed the initial of his name and enhanced with watercolor and pencil.
