Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Polygraphe.

  1. Histoire amoureuse des GaulesHistoire amoureuse des Gaules
Roger de BUSSY-RABUTIN, Gatien de COURTILZ DE SANDRAS

    Histoire amoureuse des Gaules

    S. n.|s. l. 1754|8.50 x 14.50 cm|5 volumes reliés
Clandestine edition, probably printed in Holland. An engraved title by Choffart repeated in all 5 volumes. A fine edition whose interest lies in bringing together an important collection of gallant novels from the court of Louis XIV, the Histoire amoureuse des Gaules usually occupying only one volume. The 4 other volumes thus contain a little more than 15 other novellas or small gallant novels, some by Courtilz de Sandras, others remaining anonymous. The whole constitutes an important sum of this literature linked to the century of Louis XIV.
Contemporary full marbled brown calf binding. Smooth spine decorated in grotesque style with a scattering of stars. A crack to the upper joint of...

Maximes des princes et estats souverains

    S. n.|Cologne 1686|8 x 13.50 cm|relié

Sphere edition, from the Elzevier press. The meaning of the word Maximes is quite removed from the modern sense, it is more closely linked to what governs the interests of Princes, and by which precisely they are bound. The book forms a history of international relations, studying the interests that each nation has over another: France over Flanders, the Holy Empire over France, Denmark over... It is certain that these interests are of a historical, genealogical order... The work by Courtilz de Sandras is an imitation in form of the work by the Duke of Rohan which had appeared previously under the title: Intérêts et maximes des princes et des estats souverains; his book tends to...

[Madame de LA FAYETTE] [ou Gatien COURTILZ DE SANDRAS]

    Memoires de Hollande

    Chez Estienne Michallet|à Paris 1678|10 x 15.50 cm|relié
The rare first edition, long attributed to Madame de La Fayette, and published the same year as La Princesse de Clèves, then to Courtilz de Sandras and even to Pierre Daniel Huet.
Late nineteenth-century full morocco binding signed Bellevallée glazed old red. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Wide gilt inner border. Date at foot. Very fine copy, perfectly established, with wide margins, and unwashed.
Unlike La Princesse de Clèves, or La Princesse de Montpensier, the Mémoires de Hollande is not a historical novella, but presents itself as a novel of manners that uses modern first names. The work describes, through the love affair between a Jewish woman and a Lusignan, life in the...
