    Collected edition, partly first edition, of the plays of Pierre Corneille, printed in Rouen by Laurens Maurry and sold in Paris by Augustin Courbé and Guillaume de Luyne. Illustrated with three allegorical engraved frontispieces and 23 full-page copper-engravings, largely designed by François Chauveau and engraved by artists including Jérôme David, Mathéus and Louis Spirinx.

     

    All three frontispieces are dated 1660. The title-pages and privileges of the first and third volumes are likewise dated 1660, while those of the second volume bear the date 1664. The second volume therefore belongs to the 1664 reissue...

    Fourth collective edition for the first part and third for the second and third parts, published by Corneille himself. Our copy is adorned with the frontispiece of the first two editions (dated 1645), and the portrait of Corneille by Michel Lasne, dated 1644.

    Later bindings in full blue morocco, Jansenist spines with five raised bands, endpapers and pastedowns framed with gilt dentelles of marbled paper, all edges gilt, marbled paper slipcases bordered with morocco, bindings signed by Alix.

    Rare and beautiful copy elegantly bound.

    The set is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author drawn and engraved by Auguste de Saint-Aubin and 25 hors texte figures by Jean-Michel Moreau.
    A very good complete set of the works of Pierre Corneille in contemporary half Russia.

    Half old red morocco with corners. Spine with raised bands richly decorated in the spirit of great 17th-century bindings. Gilt fillets to covers. A tear with loss to tail headcap and covers and edges and joints rubbed. Very handsome binding despite the defects. Superb interior condition.
    5 large symbolist compositions by Albert Maignan engraved as etchings and printed on China paper. A frontispiece portrait. Ornaments and typographical execution very refined in the taste of the 17th century. Handsome work executed for the 1889 Universal Exhibition.
    A bibliophilic gem.

    The piece was written for the Théâtre du Marais in Paris on the 25 February 1662 and published in July of the same year.

    Contemporary marbled brown calf, spine in six compartments with gilt compartments and fleurons as well as red and green morocco title and volume labels. Double gilt fillet to edges of covers. All edges marbled.
    Small, skillful restorations to binding.

    First edition of the third part appeared in 1654 (first 30 chapters) and following the third and fourth published in 1656. The first two books were published simultaneously in 1651. A frontispiece and 20 figures etched intaglio of after David H. and R. Du Clos for the first book volume II and 47 of the same figures for the second book volume III. Beautiful and fine prints including many scenes of martyrs and torture. The series of engravings are particularly beautiful.
    Full morocco bindings brown-black late eighteenth signed Smeers. Back with nerves decorated with 4 small florets; dates tail and golden shares. Grand central medallion on the dishes, coaching cold with angle...
