Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

George BARBIER

Born1882

NationalityFrance
Both a fashion illustrator and a book illustrator, George Barbier joined the team of contributors to the Gazette du Bon Ton from its founding in 1912.

He produced plates after gowns designed by Worth, in which female figures stand out from the background with striking effect, rendered in hieratic and elegant postures.

His allegiance to the Art Deco aesthetic is evident in his use of vertical lines, tracing a fine and slender anatomy within settings inspired by Asia. In Le Jeu des grâces, branches of cherry blossom accompany the fluid movement of the player; in La Belle aux moineaux, the birds conjure both a tapestry and a melancholic forest landscape.

From his work at the Gazette du Bon Ton, Barbier drew a remarkable command of the representation of the female figure dressed by the greatest couturiers, a talent he would subsequently bring to bear on magazines such as Fémina and Vogue.
