Edition with some parts in first edition illustrated with 14 black and white hors-texte plates (views, portraits, battles) and 9 hand-colored plates (costumes...). A large folding map at the end of volume 3. Introduction on Carthaginian, Roman, Arab and Turkish dominations; Historical summary on the empire of Morocco. The third volume on the years 1845 and 1846 was published in 1848, the first two for the first time in 1846. The second volume bears the date 1846. Contemporary half red shagreen binding. Spine with false raised bands decorated with compartments and cold and gilt fillets. Small lacks (crumbling) at head of volumes 1 and 2. Overall relatively clean set, some gatherings with foxing. On June 14, 1830, the French landed in Algeria following a diplomatic incident with the dey of Algiers linked to a French debt that the French consul refused to honor. The defeat of Abd-el-Kader, on August 14, 1843, marked the turning point in favor of France and Algeria became constitutionally French territory in 1848. Esteemed and perfectly written history.
