French first edition translated by J. J. Pacaud, librarian at Saint-Geneviève. Contemporary half glazed navy calf binding. Spine with false raised bands decorated with blind and gilt fillets, roulettes at head and tail. Gilt title. Very handsome copy in superb condition. Letters written from Santa Cruz, Saint Thomas, Saint Christopher, Antigua, Dominica, Jamaica and Cuba. Joseph-John Gurney made numerous journeys with his sister, Elizabeth Gurney in order to obtain the emancipation of black slaves in the colonies. This travel account appeared in France with the aim of converting the anti-abolitionist party, the emancipation of slaves and abolition dating in England from 1834.
