Céline's only published theatrical work, written in 1926, six years before Journey to the End of the Night, to which it may be regarded as a prelude. The character of Bardamu already makes his appearance here, working as a doctor for the League of Nations in Cameroon before travelling to the United States and Switzerland, and eventually returning to the working-class suburbs of Paris to devote himself once more to caring for the poor. The play was rejected by Gallimard.
