Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Autograph letter signed by André Malraux to Max Jacob. Two pages in black ink on a bifolium, with a drawing by Malraux.
Partially transcribed in Histoires littéraires, 2002, p. 123.
Hilarious letter by Malraux - waiting for Max Jacob to reply to his letters, he writes a false obituary announcing his correspondent's death. He added a drawing of a cat profile next to his signature.

*

The painter-poet had introduced young André to the Parisian literary and artistic world in the early 1920s. Malraux mentioned him as early as his first essays on Cubist painting and dedicated his very first book, Les Lunes de papier, published in 1921, to him. He frequently wrote long letters to his mentor and friend, hence the tongue-in-cheek reference to "his friends who send him eleven-page letters by post." The letter offers a humorous premonition of the real car accident that befell Max Jacob in 1929, resulting in several months of convalescent silence.
A splendid testament to the playful and intimate correspondence between Malraux and Max Jacob.

We thank Mr. Bourrel for helping us clarify the date of this letter.
