A fine and substantial group relating to the Vaudreuil family, of considerable importance in the history of the French colonies, both in Canada and in Saint-Domingue.
The work is illustrated, at the beginning of the volume, with a folding genealogical table printed hors-texte.
Contemporary full marbled sheep binding, spine in six compartments gilt and tooled with floral motifs, red morocco title-piece, rubbing to the joints and restorations to the spine, gilt arms stamped at the centres of the boards, minor losses and abrasions to the boards, marbled endpapers, gilt fillets to the edges partially faded, marbled edges, an early binding.
The folding plate at the beginning of the volume is torn and stained; light marginal dampstaining at the end of the volume.
The article devoted to the Rigaud de Vaudreuil family by Charles d'Hozier in his celebrated Armorial is authenticated by his printed signature as Juge d'Armes de la Noblesse de France.
It has been subsequently bound with a small manuscript note extracted from the Noblesse de France aux Croisades concerning the family, bearing the arms of Joseph-Hyacinthe-François de Paule de Rigaud de Vaudreuil (1740-1817), known as the comte de Vaudreuil, son of Joseph-Hyacinthe, marquis de Vaudreuil, governor of the French part of the island of Saint-Domingue from 1753 to 1757, himself Grand Falconer of France, created Knight of the Saint-Esprit in 1784 (OHR, pl. 1825, with variant).
He was a close friend of the comte d'Artois.
Several pieces have been added to the copy:
