Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Second edition, partly original as revised and enlarged (cf. Monglond VI, 1391.)

Our copy is preserved in its original publisher’s wrappers, under a plain beige cover of the period (disbound, spine lacking, upper cover and title-page detached, small repair in the blank margin of leaf [iii]) and housed in a modern light beige paper case, title lettered lengthwise on a black morocco label.

The first edition, published anonymously, appeared in 1805 (8vo, 80 pp.).

This new edition includes a preface by the purported translator and an errata: this leaf, sig. [vii]-viii, has been placed at the end of the volume.

A virulent pamphlet against Napoleon I, who is here concealed under the name of Nabis, the former tyrant of Sparta.

*

A versatile and intriguing figure, the Comte d’Antraigues [1753–1812] was, from 1790 to 1812, one of the principal intelligence agents of the European coalition against France and specialized in counter-propaganda.

He unwittingly played a key role in the denunciation of Pichegru, which enabled the republican majority of the Directory to carry out the coup d’état of 18 Fructidor, Year V (4 September 1797).

Under the Consulate and the Empire, Antraigues, in the service of Russia, established intelligence networks from Austria, Dresden, and England.

Cf. J. Godechot, in: Dictionnaire Napoléon, pp. 100–101.
