The painter, who received the Legion of Honor in 1828, sends his birth certificate to Count Gérard, then chancellor of the legion: "cet acte est fait au nom d'Hippolyte Delaroche, qui est le nom véritable de Mr Delaroche, celui de Paul étant un surnom d'enfance qu'il a conservé jusqu'à présent." ["this act is made in the name of Hippolyte Delaroche, which is Mr Delaroche's real name, Paul being a childhood nickname that he has kept until now."]
