BUNUEL Luis Original photograph of Jeanne Rucar, Luis Buñuel's wife $ Original photograph, contemporary print by Man Ray, a portrait of Jeanne Rucar, Buñuel's wife. Annotation to back in Buñuel's hand: "1 Mayo 1946, Foto hecha por Man Ray". A small trace of glue to back of print. Luis Buñuel met Jeanne Rucar, the love of his life when he was in Paris, where he was a frequent visitor to the studio of his artist friends Joaquim Peinado and Hernando Viñes : "I found her very pretty. From the north of France, she already knew the Spanish community in Paris thanks to her dressmaker and did harmonic gymnastics. In 1924, at the Paris Olympic Games, she even won a Bronze medal under the direction of Irène Popart" (Luis Buñuel, My Last Sigh, 1982). It was at the same time that Buñuel met Man Ray, who made several portrait photos of the director. After the fall of France in 1940, Man Ray fled to the States and Hollywood, where he continued to see Buñuel, who was working for Warner Bros. This photograph was taken a few months before Buñuel's family left for Mexico. A rare photograph of Jeanne Rucar, Buñuel's only wife, who remained discreet throughout her life on the subject of her home life.
