Anna de Noailles is still amazed by her first and memorable encounter with the scandalous writer: "J'ai rencontré il y a vingt-cinq ans, chez des amis, un jeune homme silencieux, qui ne riait pas, dont le regard était à la fois distrait et obstiné. C'était Pierre Louÿs... Jeune fille, je n'avais pu lire Aphrodite et les Chansons de Bilitis qu'en dérobant et en replaçant les livres dans la bibliothèque de mon frère." ("I met twenty-five years ago, at friends', a silent young man who did not laugh, whose gaze was both distracted and obstinate. It was Pierre Louÿs... As a young girl, I could only read Aphrodite and the Songs of Bilitis by stealing and replacing the books in my brother's library.")
She was soon captivated by reading La femme et le pantin: "Peu de temps après, le roman espagnol La femme et le pantin m'arriva. Cet excès de passion, de jalousie, de taquinerie voluptueuse, ce bagne de l'amour n'a pas cessé de m'éblouir..." ("Shortly after, the Spanish novel La femme et le pantin came to me. This excess of passion, jealousy, voluptuous teasing, this prison of love has never ceased to dazzle me...") but also terrified: "... on retrouve le même goût de poivre det d'oeillet dans un conte où une femme rieuse tue son amant en lui enfonçant dans le coeur, à travers la persienne qui sépare la chambre de la rue, un couteau dont l'auteur dépeint miraculeusement le mortel trajet..."
