Prosper Mérimée's letter is devoted to the career of Félix Auvray, a painter from Valenciennes, in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He reports on all his awards: a first medal in the historical composition contest, a second medal in live model drawing, another first medal in a historical composition contest. Félix Auvray is admitted to the admission for the big painting contest and can hope to compete at the grand prize. Mérimée writes this letter to attest to the benefit the student brings to the city of Valenciennes.
