Registered in Soissons on 9 June 1795, this power of attorney establishes that Citizen Marie Thérèse Alexandrine de la Combe is the sole heir to a plantation in Saint-Domingue following the recent death of her father, Philippe de la Combe. The document records that her husband, Pierre Maximilien César Vangermez du Fay (a former musketeer and dragoon officer), authorises her to act and undertake the necessary legal proceedings. Amid the Haitian Revolution, the couple are unable to travel to the colony. They therefore appoint Justinien Cameron as their attorney in Cap-Français, granting him full powers to administer the plantation and restore its operations. The document expressly authorises him to recruit labourers and 'nègres' for the restoration of the estate. It further stipulates that any debts incurred in operating the Saint-Domingue plantation shall in no circumstances affect the couple's property in Europe or render it liable to seizure.
An exceptionally rare historical annotation in the margin records a dispute concerning a bequest of a 'Brillant de cent Diamants' (a jewel set with one hundred diamonds), intended for a certain Sieur Brillant de Sigaud.
One quarto document comprising three manuscript leaves written in brown ink. Signatures and names of the appointed representatives at the end. In good condition, with a few minor losses to the margins.
