Portrait of Victor Hugo on albumen paper in three-quarter view, his right hand slipped under his waistcoat, wearing a wool coat and jacket. A photograph mounted on rigid cardboard. Caption at bottom margin with photographer's name and address: E.Appert, expert - Photographe du Président de la République - 24, Rue Taitbout, Paris. Blank verso. Minute lacks to top margin. The photograph 19x25cm. A small tear to bottom margin, at the address location. Since Appert was the official photographer of deputies and senators, it is possible that Victor Hugo was photographed by him in this capacity since he was elected senator of the Seine in 1876. The photograph was probably part of an iconographic album grouping the photos of deputies and senators. Appert seems to have paid great attention to the pose of the writer-senator which differs greatly from most of his official photographs whose poses are more common and far from being as sophisticated. A copy at Victor Hugo's house in Guernsey, Hauteville-house also possessing a copy in cabinet card format.
