Seconde édition elsevirienne. Il y en eut quatre, la première ayant paru en 1646 ; elle sont toutes basées sur l'édition de Bordeaux. Un Titre frontispice allégorique, une vignette aux armes du Prince Maximilien de Bourgogne.
Reliure en plein maroquin rouge de la fin du XIXe signée Gruel en queue. Dos à nerfs orné. Titre et date dorés. Double filet d'encadrement sur les plats. Riche frise intérieure. Tranches dorées. Infimes traces de frottement. Zones légèrement blanchâtres sur les plats, visibles en contre jour.
Très bel exemplaire.
De la Sagesse est un traité de philosophie morale dans lequel l'auteur analyse des opinions qui furent rejetées par le Clergé et le Parlement, lesquels condamnèrent le livre. Charron y prône en effet une tolérance religieuse extrème, séparant la religion de la morale (celle-ci fondée sur le droit naturel) annonçant qu'on est homme avant d'embrasser une quelconque religion, ouvrant ainsi l'espace d'une pensée laïque. Il associe l'idée de Dieu à la nature, la notion d'être homme précèdant ainsi le fait religieux, ce qui était proprement inacceptable voire hérétique à l'époque. Il  conseille en outre le doute en toute chose, ce dont Descartes s'inspirera pour son Discours de la méthode. Il fera ainsi gravé sur un linteau dans sa maison de Condom la devise "je ne sais".
