The work is an attack and critical commentary on Voltaire's Treatise on Tolerance. The work was well received both by its detractors (Voltaire, D'Alembert) and the public. The author demonstrates not only nourished and erudite argumentation, but without pedantry and always with impartiality, which Voltaire himself applauded. The Letters are not a defense of the church, but of religion. As for the style, Abbé Guenée establishes a dialogue with Voltaire, and his purpose is clear, demonstrative, and in no way sententious.
