Original manuscript of a work published in 1674 under the same title, by Pierre de Bats, in Paris. The text, in a state certainly prior to publication, presents many variants from the edition which contains additions and stylistic variations. The manuscript therefore presents a state that precedes publication; the copy established around 1800 is clean and without erasures, in fine and legible handwriting in black ink. Full brown sheep binding from the late 18th century. Decorated smooth spine. Beige morocco title label. Rubbing. 2 corners slightly bumped. Fine copy, very fresh. Alfonso III d'Este, Duke of Modena, became a Capuchin in 1628 after leaving the governance of the Duchy of Ferrara to his son. He became a preacher and missionary during the plague in 1630, then retired to a convent. Father Casimir de Toulouse wrote this edifying life in the name of Christianity and placed this biography within a broader design, that of the power of faith and Christian principles over nobility and earthly power.
