Rare first edition (cf. Quérard IV, 138. NUC: 3 copies).

Written in French by J.A. Borelly (a German translation by G.W. Bartoldy appeared simultaneously from the same publisher), these engaging memoirs are the work of the Swedish general Johann Ludwig von Hordt [1719-1778].

Contemporary full grey paper boards, red shagreen title-piece with a small marginal defect, smooth spine, joints rubbed, binding of the period.

Preserved in a modern green paper box; title label at the head of the spine.

On pp. 117-119 appears the account of a meeting with Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Amsterdam.

After embarking on a military career, Hordt "joua un rôle des plus actifs à l'époque de la révolution de 1756, qui restreignit considérablement l'autorité royale sous Adolphe-Frédéric, se vit contraint de quitter la Suède pour échapper à la peine capitale qu'il avait encourue, comme membre d'une conjuration formée contre le gouvernement sénatorial, et se rendit alors en Prusse. Frédéric le Grand l'accueillit favorablement, et lui donna un commandement dans ses armées. Hordt se conduisit avec distinction pendant la guerre de Sept ans, et fut chargé ensuite d'accompagner le prince Henri de Prusse dans ses voyages en Russie". Cf. Larousse.
