The rare first edition, illustrated with 9 armorial plates (each containing 46 coats of arms) of subscribers, 4 double-page plates of the cathedral (interior and exterior), plan of the cathedral, 36 plates (Tombs, chapels...), several in-text figures and some historiated initials, all by James Cole. Title-page in red and black. Handsome publication. Contemporary full speckled calf binding with mosaic frame of Havana calf on boards. Spine with raised bands decorated with blind fleurons remade in 20th century with original red morocco title-label. Corners also restored. Blind ruled frame on boards and blind corner fleurons. Very fresh copy. The work contains a history of the church before the dissolution of the monastery, a monograph of the present church, lives of the archbishops and priors of Canterbury.
