Valentine GROSS
(1887-1968)
Illustrator of La Gazette du Bon Ton

Painter and illustrator, Valentine Gross studied at the Beaux Arts in Paris between 1907 and 1910 and then designed the costumes and choreography the Rite of Spring by Vaslav Nijinsky in 1913.

It was at this time that she began drawing fashion thumbnails for your Good Gazette, in a very recognizable graphic style. Engravings, executed in ink, are distinguished from others by their lack of color that enhances the sleek style and the precise line of Valentine Gross. The bodies become silhouettes and the creations of fashion designers are even more enhanced by a subtle play of light and shade. Towards 1926, it binds to the surrealists and away from the world of fashion, preferring the illustration of books Char, Eluard and Crevel.
