Rare and precious signed autograph inscription to Victor Hugo "... with the affectionate respects of the author..."
Eugène Spuller, close friend and collaborator of Léon Gambetta, owed his political rise to Victor Hugo when Hugo chose him "to be his substitute in the senatorial elections of the Seine". (Eugène Spuller (1835-1896): itinéraire d'un républicain par Nathalie Bayon). Deputy of the Seine, a year later, he had a brilliant political career alongside Léon Gambetta and was appointed minister three times during the Third Republic. Victor Hugo mentions him several times in Choses vues.

Babouot, spine in six compartments with gilt dots and double gilt compartments richly decorated with gilt motifs, gilt fillet frame to covers, some corners slightly bumped, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, ex libris of Victor Hugo pasted to versos of upper covers.
Handsome autograph inscription signed by Arsène Houssaye to Victor Hugo, "au maître des maîtres / à mon cher Victor Hugo / Arsène Houssaye [To the master of masters / my dear Victor Hugo / Arsène Houssaye]”, on a leaf bound in at start of first volume.
The page with the inscription has a small angular lack, a few spots mostly affecting the endpapers.

This original work was used to illustrate a scene from “The Earth” in the first illustrated edition of Emile Zola's work, published by Marpon & Flammarion in 1889.
