Et dont le père est un vieil ami" ["to Miss Josette Arnaud whose brother is already an experienced pilot with forty-six hours of flight time... And whose father is an old friend"]
    Half blue morocco binding, spine with five raised bands, gilt date at foot, paper boards, grey paper endpapers and pastedowns, top edge gilt on deckled edges, binding signed P. Goy and C. Vilaine.

    Exceptional working manuscript of a passage from the original French version of Wind Sand and Stars [Terre des Hommes] from chapter VI "Dans le désert", a magnificent ode to the barren wilderness of deserts doomed to disappear due to the inevitable development of the industrial age. This section from the original French novel was removed for the English version translated by Galantière and remains unpublished in English. Moreover, the final two paragraphs of the manuscript are unpublished in the original French version...

    Son of Charles Sarton du Jonchay, then garrisoned in Algeria, Christian Sarton du Jonchay enlisted at fourteen in the Algerian Auxiliary Spahis Regiment commanded by his father. After numerous adventures, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre and became, at only fifteen, the youngest quartermaster sergeant in France. After serving in various cavalry regiments and chasseur battalions, he was wounded in July 1918 and ended the war with seven citations, as lieutenant and knight of the Legion of Honor...
