“Veuve Leclerc” (“Widow Leclerc”) refers to Barbe-Victoire d’Aspremont, widow of Jean-Baptiste-Hyacinthe Leclerc, royal and “intendance” printer in Nancy (Lorraine). After her husband’s death (he is documented as active from 1761 to 1776), she took over the workshop and continued to print under the imprint “A Nancy, chez la veuve Leclerc, imprimeur de l’intendance”. Her name appears on official publications for the administration of Lorraine and Barrois (ordinances, legal dictionaries), on military almanacs, and on religious or didactic literature such as the provincial edition of Bonaventure Giraudeau’s Histoires et paraboles (Nancy, 1783). Archival records show that Barbe-Victoire d’Aspremont managed the royal printing office in her own right and faced financial disputes over unpaid bills, a reminder of both the importance and the economic vulnerability of provincial printing houses on the eve of the French Revolution.

    Half calf binding with small vellum corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and dentelle rolls, an old red morocco title label, marbled paper boards, sprinkled edges; a modern binding.

    A few passages unfortunately underlined in red ballpoint pen on several leaves (around ten in total), a light marginal dampstain on the first two leaves, modern bookplate pasted on a pastedown.

    Only edition, uncommon, of this unexpected work: the Dauphinois Claude-Pierre de Delay d'Agier (1750–1827) was above all a political figure of the Revolution and the Empire, mayor of Romans in 1789, fully committed to the new ideas. Yet he had attended in Lunéville from 1774...
