    First Dutch edition after the original French edition of 1722. It is copiously illustrated in volume I with a frontispiece by Gunst, an engraved epistle page, 2 title headpieces, 7 maps, 35 plates including several on double pages, some with 2 figures per plate; in volume II with a title headpiece, 60 plates (including several on double pages) and 4 plates of medals. The plates represent views and scenes, costumes, monuments, archaeology...
    Modern pastiche binding in full brown calfskin. Spine with raised bands decorated. Spine lightened. Traces of rubbing. Some foxing and occasional worming, browned pages, others yellowed, some with browning. One plate in volume II with 10 cm tear repaired. In volume I, p. 265, words underlined in blue pencil.
    A monument of exegetical literature accompanied by superb illustration. The work is a dictionary that is historical, geographical and chronological.

    Contemporary full vellum binding gilt with the arms of the city of Amsterdam. Smooth spine decorated with 5 small stamps with the arms of the city of Amsterdam, roll tooling in place of raised bands. Boards stamped at center with the large arms of the city of Amsterdam, gilt roll border and Amsterdam arms stamps in the corners. Gilding almost entirely faded on the central arms. Traces of ties. Title in black ink. Spine soiled. Some foxing.
    Bookplate: Bibliothèque de M. A. R. Couronne.
    Esteemed critical edition. The numerous notes and commentaries occupy three-quarters of each page. At the end: Andrea Schotti notae; annalies velleiani seu vita paterculi ab Henrico Dodwello.
