    Le Barbier de Séville and Le Mariage de Figaro bound in one volume.

     

    Modern half brown chagrin binding, sides in yellow and black marbled paper, spine with five raised bands, author, titles and dates gilt, one gilt fleuron, stone paper doublures. Corners lightly rubbed, leaves lightly browned, a few scattered spots of foxing and soiling, a tear to the title page, a modern repair to the upper margin of the first leaves.

     

    Rare piracies bearing the date of the first edition and issued by the same publisher.

    First edition of this complete collection, including the portrait of Cochin as frontispiece. Some of the memoirs had appeared in 1773, but the collected edition that brings them all together is indeed dated 1774; certain pieces are dated 1773 as they were added after the title page bearing the 1774 date. Although the pagination varies, the collection contains only one general title page; some memoirs have half-titles, others do not.

    Contemporary binding in full brown grained calf. Spine with raised bands decorated with 5 compartmented fleurons. Red morocco title-label. Head worn. Rubbing. An old dampstain has weakened the first leaves at the outer margin (2cm long by 1cm wide).
    The first written biography of Marguerite de Valois, known as Queen Margot, in a very romantic style, but without any lyricism and of great clarity. The scandalous life of Queen Margot had to wait until 1777 to find its historian.

Title with blank verso, list of eleven booksellers distributing the work and note to reader on verso of half-title; half-title following preface with, on verso, the list of characters, official approval and imprimatur at beginning dated the 25th and 31st January 1785 under the names of Bret and Lenoir, while at the end, the two official approvals are dated 28th February 1784 from Coqueley de Chaussepierre and 21st March 1784 from Bret.
