DE LA COSTE
Voyage philosophique d'Angleterre, fait en 1783 et 1784
Chez Poinçot|à Paris 1787|11 x 18.50 cm|relié
First edition.
Contemporary half brown marbled sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with roulettes. Tan calf title label. Rootwork paper boards. 3 wormholes at foot. One cut at head. Rubbing to headcaps, joints, edges. Missing the title page of the second volume as well as 4 preliminary table pages.
The author's name comes from the correspondence of Grimm and Meister, who praised this journey, the publisher stating in the foreword that he knew nothing about the author. This journey is the work of a cultivated man, who read Sterne's A Sentimental Journey through France, and who paints a varied portrait of England. 19 letters written by a gentleman to his wife provide a tableau of English customs and society, with extensive comparisons to France (water, Hospital, police, theatre, Parliament...).
