A leading seventeenth-century Leiden printer-bookseller, Joannes Maire is recorded c. 1602–1657. Born in Valenciennes, he worked at Sint Pieterskoorsteeg in Leiden and issued numerous scholarly titles in Latin and the vernacular. He is best known as the original printer of Descartes’s Discours de la méthode (A Leyde, De l’imprimerie de Ian Maire, 1637). Printer’s mottos include Fac et spera.
