Contemporary full marbled brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with 5 fleurons. Red morocco title label. Head very worn. Lacking at upper joint at tail. Upper joint cracked at head. 2 corners slightly bumped. Joints rubbed, as well as spine and headcaps.
This translation brings together two English editions: Needham's Account of some New Microscopical Discoveries (1745) and Observations upon the General Composition and Decomposition of Animal and Vegetable Substances (1749), and additionally contains substantial additions appearing for the first time. The first work is an account of Needham's various observations, notably on squid, pollen, eels, lizards, etc. The second expounds the theory of generation that places the author in the vitalist camp, whose axiom opposes Buffon's theories on genetics. At rear: Description and Use of the Microscope with one plate.
